In the early morning hours of August 27, 2023, a massive heavy rainstorm wreaked havoc across
various districts of Yichang, Hubei province.
Particularly hard-hit areas include Yiling District, Wufeng, Yidu, western Zhijiang,
western Dangyang, and central Yuan'an, with Wufeng experiencing the most severe impact.
Promptly responding to the escalating situation,
Wufeng authorities issued a red rainstorm warning to alert residents.
Reports indicate that the Yuyangguancheng District received over 100 millimeters of
rainfall within just three hours, leading to a swift rise in the water level of the Yuyang River.
The deluge inundated several road segments, leaving numerous vehicles submerged on the streets.
Buildings were not spared from the onslaught,
as floodwaters surged to heights of up to one meter in many areas.
Even small villages were not immune, with floodwaters breaching the confines of homes.
The force of the river proved formidable,
washing away crucial roadways and exacerbating the challenges of rescue and relief efforts.
Swift action was taken by the County Public Security Bureau,
which activated their emergency response plan.
Enhanced staffing was deployed to maintain constant vigilance,
standing ready for immediate rescue operations.
Traffic controls were swiftly enforced on inundated roads,
offering a lifeline for those trapped by the rising waters.
Presently, the Xiling District has already received over 70 millimeters of precipitation.
Meteorological forecasts predict that within the next three hours, Yichang
City and its surrounding regions could witness precipitation levels exceeding 100 millimeters.
Authorities urge residents to exercise utmost caution and preparedness as the
meteorological risks remain exceedingly high.
